Sa Calobra Climb: One of Mallorca’s Most Iconic Rides
The Sa Calobra climb, also known as Coll dels Reis, is one of the most famous and frequently ridden climbs in Mallorca. There are two main ways to approach this iconic ascent:
- From sea level at Sa Calobra: A challenging Category 1 climb that offers stunning views and a thrilling experience.
- From the viaduct side: A slightly easier Category 4 climb, but still a rewarding challenge for any cyclist.
Coll dels Reis / Sa Calobra Climb
The main Sa Calobra climb, a Category 1 ascent, takes you from sea level to the 682m peak over a distance of 9.5km, with an average gradient of 7%. Cyclists from all over the world come to ride this legendary climb, which is considered by many to be one of, if not the best climb in Europe.
The Descent:
The descent from the summit is just as thrilling as the climb. You’ll drop nearly 700m to sea level, descending on a road built in 1932 that seems custom-made for cyclists. With no tunnels and plenty of swooping bends, it’s an exhilarating ride down.
Make sure to say “Hola!” and smile when passing the Mallorca Cycling Photos team, who are always there to capture stunning images of you in action on Sa Calobra.
By the time you reach the small port at the bottom, your hands and fingers may be sore from braking, and your neck will probably need a rest from the incredible views you’ll be soaking in along the way.
The Ascent:
The Sa Calobra climb is on many cyclists’ bucket lists and is widely considered the most sought-after climb in Mallorca. The road winds up from the small port over 9.5km of tarmac that appears to have been thrown onto the side of the mountain just for cyclists.
Expect numerous hairpin bends and short, sharp straights that make it hard to find a steady rhythm, as the gradient keeps shifting.
What to look out for:
- Tourist Traffic: Coaches and rental cars frequently descend the hill to Port Sa Calobra between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM daily. If you want to avoid the crowds, aim to reach the aqueduct by 9:00 AM for an early start. This will help you miss the tourist buses and rental cars that collect passengers after breakfast.
- Cycling Hazards: If you find yourself stuck behind traffic, pull over to the side and take a quick break—snapping a few photos will also give you a clear run ahead. Be aware that your brakes may get hot, and your hands and fingers may tire quickly. There is a Mallorca Bicycle Rescue hotspot about three-quarters of the way down, where cyclists have often overshot corners, causing minor damage to their bikes or themselves. Be careful!
- Prices at Port Sa Calobra: The prices for food and drinks at Port Sa Calobra can be higher than usual due to its captive market, so be prepared.
