Port des Canonge Climb

Port des Canonge: A Hidden Gem

Just off the world-famous MA-10, at the 80km marker between Banyalbufar and Port de Valldemossa, lies a fantastic descent to the small village of Port des Canonge. It’s a bit off the beaten path, but it’s a total joy to ride and well worth the detour.

The Descent

The quiet, swooping road is lined with trees, offering regular glimpses of the blue sea far below. The scenery is stunning—so much so, that many cyclists have been distracted and misjudged the tightness of the hairpin bends. This area is a Mallorca Bicycle Rescue hotspot, with issues like broken hangers and damaged front wheels being common. Keep your eyes on the road!

The Ascent

The climb back up from Port des Canonge averages around 7%, but there are a few flatter sections and a short, intense kick up to 15% just before the top. There are so many hairpin turns that you’ll lose count, and once again, the scenery is simply amazing (I know, we’re repeating ourselves, but it really is!).

 Things to be aware of

The Port des Canonge road is narrow. While it’s usually quiet, be prepared for the occasional tourist in a rental car, distracted by the stunning views and not always watching for cyclists.

Parts of the road have been resurfaced, so the surface quality varies. Overall, it’s in good shape, and for cyclists from the UK, it might feel like a billiard table! But, just remember: it’s better to take the descent slowly than to rush it.
